OT - Sandisk
OT - SNDK Quite OT, and quite unlikely, but:
Anyone follow SNDK? I've been in and out of the stock. They had
a bad quarter last time, and the stock got murdered - high in the
low 100's, crashed down to about 63 or so. They're now around 68. I
must be missing something - I would think that flash is a growth
sector, perhaps somewhat similar to optical networking, given how
many places it shows up - from server arrays to SSD drives. SNDK is
the leader (exclusive patent? - production ahead of competition?)
of 3D nand flash. I don't know the internals of the stock well, but
if any has followed it, I'd be grateful for the opinion.

I agree that flash is a growth sector. However, I think
that the way flash is made tends to lead to boom/bust cycles and
boom/bust pricing. SNDK and others tend to get in cycles
where they make too much of it and they have to wait for inventory
levels to normalize (and you can imagine pricing is terrible for
them during these times). So, even though the overall
flash memory market grows, the economics of it are very
irregular.
I once messed around with SNDK, but these cycles drove me
crazy so I left it and never looked back.

OT - SNDK - Kip - thanks for the reply. Yes, the boom/bust
on all memory, not only flash, is just about impossible to time.
I'm thinking that might be somewhat amliorated by the new 3d Nand
flash now coming to market - I see an awful lot of 'old Nand' SSD's
being discounted, as a 'product clearance' while products
containing the new 'new Nand' comes to market to replace it. I need
to do more research on 3d Nand, as I don't know what SNDK being the
'market leader' on that means - copyright holder? first to
marketplace? biggest producer? Obviously, I need to do more DD when
I can.
