Yes, if you find out what the deal is, please do. Who do they
think they are charging funny-munny fees - Micrsoft? I'd ask my
broker, but they're so behind the curve that ALU doesn't exist
anymore would be news to them.
Most of the ADRs in Europe that I have - I seem to remember
25-27% foreign tax as the usual - I may be misremembering. Not
quite sure how the math works out with 15% + 1.72%, if that is the
deal. It may even be a good one, if other countries are charging
mid-20's. Still, buying European shares, esp without ADRs is a
tricky deal, usually. Years ago I wanted to buy some UBI, and
checked it out - but they never had a solid price, you had to 'bid'
what you wanted to pay and see if there were takers, then a fee to
the French bourse, then a fee to the brokerage in France for doing
the transaction, then a currency-exchange fee for....because they
could, I guess. I just dropped the idea.
Speaking of funny munny and MSFT - It's clear that the 'culture'
Bill Gates created is alive and well - they haven't been
innoavators of much of anything for decades - the business model is
having users by the b*lls, and squeezing them when they want more
munny. It's much like a document imaging program - Paperport - that
I used for years until they were bought out - and their
product is now horrible, their customer support non-existant (wait
until the next broken version comes out, and buy that) - but your
whole document system is dependent on them, after using them for
decades, so you can't switch.
Anyway, MSFT promised Win 10 would be a 'subscription serivce',
but quickly said it's not money extracting game: All 'subscription'
meant was that when you bought it, you owned it for the 'life' of
the program and its support - expected to be at least 3-4 years.
Now they just announced that it *will* be a money-ransom product,
as each user will be charged $7 per month for using it. They did
say this only applies to 'enterprise' users, not individuals. For
now.
