today - beginning of bear market or...

I don't know if anyone will read this - Is There Anybody Out There? (Pink Floyd) - but I am wondering if today is the first move creating the next bear market. I've noticed some weakness previously in top heavey stocks that aren't Reddit favs. Today is a broader selloff even after job numbers were relatively decent. I know we have thought the market was a bit oversold for some time and eventually it would have to correct a bit. Anyone have thoughts?

I have been very cautious over the past 2 months.  When I get the feeling that even a monkey can beat the S&P index, I begin to worry.  I am very close to retirement, a 13 months at most.  So I started to lighten up.

That said, while the Treasury yield has been on a rapid rise and the market frets when yields rocket higher, I feel that with so many people under-employed, it will be tough to get the economy to overheat on a long term persistent basis. Yes, people will go crazy on trips, shopping etc.. but it will be a surge that will not be able to persist for more than a year or two.  The rest of the population will be strapped for cash.  A lot of pain lingers.

So back to the market, my take is that the yield rise will taper off and the market will settle down

I am still ~8-9 years from retirement. Have to get my youngest through college and get enough years in my system. Slightly jealous that you are 13 months out - congrats! I sold my NIO at 53. Felt weak. Almost bought more at 33, but it is such a high risk, high reward. Either way thanks for turning me on to it.

The thought of retirement is still a bit unnerving, not because of my financial situation, I am ready, rather it is because I need to make sure I am mentally prepared to be 100% not doing programming.  Thing is, I really enjoy the kind of work I do.  I suppose I will figure out how to keep myself engaged.

Jester,

Are you a programmer and are you retired?  Not that what you do in your free time would match my preferences, but just out of curiosity, if you are retired, how do you entertain yourself?

Maybe the questions should be generalized to all here?

So, this is me:

I love the stock market, love to read financial news, do my own due diligence. I read anything that is financial news.  Funny thing, I am not much of a book person, don't read novels much, in fact it has been years.  My wife is a great cook and now that I work from home, I am helping in the kitchen and surprise, surprise, I like it.

I am thinking of volunteering at some school to teach basic financial advice, like how to teach people of the very basics of budgeting, also thinking of learning languages, especially Italian and French.  Will see if I do all these when I retire.

Anyhow, looking forward to hearing from all of you.

Can you contract in industry? Teach as an adjunct at a nearby community college or even possibly a university? Find programs to get inner city youth into coding and programming and volunteer. You have skills that are in need, even in retirement. Share your love of your work and help create the love across generations.

I would be open to teaching.  Don't know if I could be effective, but I would at least like to consider it. Maybe you could offer some pointers on how I could go about it, who to contact, would I need any training in teaching  etc ...

Teaching opportunities in programming are likely to be at volunteer level or comunity college (CC). K-12 usually requires a license although sometimes they partner with working (or recently retired) professionsals. Do some google searches and see what you might like, then reach out to the group or CC. I can certainly offer any guideance that I can.
