Activision Announces Big League Sports for Wii Yes, yet another
collection of sports mini-games for Nintendo's console. By Kris
Pigna Have Wii Sports, Deca Sports, Big Beach Sports, and Mario
& Sonic at the Olympic Games just not been enough to sate your
monstrous hunger for sport-themed mini-game collections on the Wii?
Then good news -- Activision has announced they'll be releasing Big
League Sports this holiday season, which, yes, brings a whole new
collection of sport-themed mini-games for the Wii. Before our
cynical natures take over completely, it should be noted that Big
League Sports seems to be focusing on a specific style of gameplay
that may set it (at least a little bit) apart from previous Wii
sports games. According to the press release, Big League Sports has
"a singular focus on putting players in the most thrilling
situations while competing in their favorite sports." It'll include
tennis, basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse, and hockey, and
each game will have its own "hit the shot and the buzzer" kind of
moments. No specific examples of these moments were given, but it
sounds as if Big League Sports will be similar to, say, the sort of
modes often seen in Madden games, where you immediately start in an
already intense moment in a close game. "Big League Sports evolves
the family friendly 'pick up and play' sports gaming experience on
Wii," said Dave Oxford, Activision Publishing. "Featuring some of
the world's most popular sports in one title, 'game night' will
take on a whole new tone as up to four players swing, kick, dunk,
charge and skate their way to victory." Hopefully that "whole new
tone" won't include vicious, curse-laden taunting (or do your "game
nights" already have plenty of vicious, curse-laden taunting?).
There will be a combined 22 events across the six sports, with
single game, marathon, and tournament modes offered. There will
also be a character creation mode, which seems to suggest Miis
won't have a big role in the game. No specific release date other
than "this holiday season" was given, nor any pricing details.
